This online gallery archives a research and engagement project by artist Andy Abbott about Hidden Wakefield undertaken in Summer 2016 and commissioned by Beam on behalf of the Wakefield Arts Partnership.

The Centre for Dark Matter is a travelling pyramid that contains people, groups, places and events from the Wakefield District that deserve more visibility. As well as browsing the contents, you are invited to add your own suggestions about what should be in the pyramid. The Centre for Dark Matter becomes an ever evolving vessel reflecting how people value and relate to a place.

The Centre for Dark Matter is a travelling pyramid that contains people, groups, places and events that deserve more visibility. As well as browsing the contents, you are invited to add your own suggestions about what should be in the pyramid. In this way The Centre for Dark Matter becomes an ever evolving vessel reflecting how people value and relate to a place.

During the Summer of 2016 the Centre for Dark Matter travelled to a number of venues and events around the Wakefield District. Passers-by looked inside the pyramid and suggested their own ideas for contents from Wakefield’s past, present and future.

These contributions are archived at www.darkmattercentre.com.

This print presents the research in the form of a Wakefield Zodiac and accompanying horoscopes that have been created by splicing newspaper horoscopes with the results of the research about Hidden Wakefield.

Wakefield Zodiac performance as part of Unity Words event
7pm at Unity Works, Pay-as-you-feel.
Texts are read by three performers. The texts are fragments from newspaper horoscopes adapted to include the results of research about Hidden Wakefield. The voices are processed, looped and combined with a synthesiser backing track to form a live chance-generated composition that references cut up poetry, early electronic minimalism and new age cosmology. Projected visuals accompany the performance.

The performance offers an artistic meditation on the Wakefield district’s people, places and events from the past, present and future.

Voices: Toria Garbutt, Kirsty Taylor, Jacqui Wicks
Music, writing and research: Andy Abbott
