The Strawberry Tart Trail was a project researched and conducted between March and May 2006 investigating themes of indulgence and endurance, as well as offering a fresh idea for engagement in a city navigated by its participants almost daily. What better way to rediscover and re-evaluate a city than to eat your way around it? In addition the trail would be a source of education, dotted with intensely-researched facts, figures and strawberry anecdotes to broaden the participants’ knowledge of this often overlooked fruit.

The Strawberry Tart Trail sought to breathe new life into the everyday activities like walking through the city and eating. Similarly, for those chefs, bakers, café owners and restaurateurs involved in the project behind the scenes The Strawberry Tart Trail helped to reinstate the fun, sensory element to a service they provide which has been diluted over time by commerce.

A dose of healthy competition revealed a political undercurrent, who would win the fight between local independent grassroots bakeries and the multinational conglomerates in the quest to find the best strawberry tart in Leeds? Does young spirit triumph over exclusive ‘quality’?
