Cat Spotting has a long tradition in Saltaire. Sir Titus Salt proclaimed that it strengthened moral fibre and encouraged his workers to partake in the pastime in the hope that it would divert their attention from ‘less savoury’ pursuits such as drinking and politics.

Today residents of Saltaire uphold the custom and it is not unusual to spy groups of young men and women as well as families indulging in a Sunday afternoon cat-walk to aid digestion.

Now you too can try out the wholesome hobby using the cat map and spotter’s table available to download here. Please see the Cat Walk section for more details.

Naturally, the pursuit has developed with the times and today technology plays an important role. Mobile and digital cameras as well as GPS applications have turned Cat Spotting into a thoroughly modern and at times competitive pursuit. See the gallery for examples of cats spotted and submissions from cat spotters in Saltaire.
