Participatory Mapping / Anecdote Sharing Session about Bradford’s Radical Cultural Activity
Please join us on Thursday 26th September for an evening session discussing and finding out about Bradford’s radical cultural activity: past and present.
Facilitated by artist collective Black Dogs, the session will be an opportunity to share stories, contribute information, browse archive materials and have a natter about the type of against-the-grain, socially-engaged, DIY, politicised, unorthodox, leftfield or just plain naughty artistic and (counter) cultural activity that has emerged - and is still emerging - from the city.
This Summer Black Dogs took Jeff Nuttall’s 1968 book Bomb Culture, and his time spent teaching at Bradford College in the 1970s, as a starting point for conversations about Bradford’s radical past. We heard first hand accounts of new forms of protest, public art, street theatre, labour movements, creative interventions, peoples’ festivals, student actions, forming identity politics, punk music, popular uprisings, social centres, raves, common use of public space and much more. From this an alternative picture of Bradford began to form.
We’d now like to invite you to help add to this portrait of the hidden or overlooked side of the city. Bring your stories, memories, personal experiences and any photos, posters, flyers, or other material relating to Bradford’s cultural activity that you consider to be part of what makes it a radically different city.
